Becoming a trans-dicsciplinary engineer in the Biomedical domain

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “Medical devices are essential for prevention, diagnosis, management of diseases and rehabilitation, to avoid danger and improve efficiency of medical treatments. The aim of development of health, the goals of the coming centuries, suppose the manufacturing, the regulations, the planning, the evaluation, the acquisition, the management and the use of medical devices which are of quality, safe and adapted to their context of use”.

Still according to WHO, today 1.5 million of products are qualified as medical devices for various uses requiring a large spectrum of technologies. These medical devices go from the simple bandage to very high-technology medical devices (HTMD).

Among the existing HTMD, there are a variety of devices :

  • For personal use in the cardio-vascular domain (pacemakers, cardiac valves, stents, vascular prostheses, defibrillators …), in gastric and abdominal surgery (implants for abdominal repair, gastric rings), pelvic surgery (uterine rings, prostheses, urinary incontinence and prolapse, …) or orthopedic surgery (prostheses of hip, knees, rachis, bend), but also all ortheses (legs, knees, arm, neck)
  • Endoscopic instrumentation for surgery or care
  • Medical imaging (MRI, scanners, nuclear imaging, ultrasonic imaging), sometimes used for or during treatment

In this socio-economic context, Centrale Lille is offering a BioMedical Engineering (BME) Master’s program to respond to the needs of the industries developing those techniques, probes and equipment for HTMD which are increasingly required by medical doctors in their daily work.

The program is based both on compulsory courses in fundamental sciences (Physics, Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Measurements, Control systems and Mechanical Engineering), Medical Sciences (Anatomy, Ethics, Regulatory and Bio-compatible materials) and management on one hand; and on application of every new skills in project-based work.

Students are mentored on a weekly basis by 2nd year student, and twice a month by a faculty member to closely follow their progress and help them to reach success.

Training objective

The objective is to train professionals with trans-displinary skills (physics, electronics, mechanics, signal processing …) to answer more accurately to the biomedical industry: medical imaging, medical device development, surgical implants, prosthesis/orthesis, exoskeletons, etc.

In addition to engineering courses (Mechanics, EEA, Physics, Signal Processing), students are taught about medical courses such as anatomy, biology or regulation and business courses (management, marketing, law, health systems, etc.). The profile of graduate students is oriented towards engineering or research careers that will enable to develop future’s care tools (personalized medicine, assistance with diagnosis or specific patient treatment).

Teaching

The teachers and researchers involved in BME belong to research units which activities are related to the field of health. Each engineering course (Mechanics, EEA, Physics, Signal Processing) is illustrated by examples of laboratory activities (engineering and/or medical domains).

In addition, the projects proposed in these modules during the first semester (S1) are applied to a health topics and allow students to apply the concepts discussed during the courses.

The transdisciplinary projects of the S2 and S3 are supported by medical referees and/or teaching staff. CentraleLille’s Biomedial Engineering platform also strengthens this expertise.

6-month full-time industrial internship in industries or research laboratory involved on MDHT developments

  • Project manager / Innovation manager / Sales / Entrepreneur…
At the end of the second year (M2), students must complete a master’s internship (6 months) in Company in R&D or research laboratory.

About the master

The BioMedical Engineering Master’s program is jointly offered in English by Centrale Lille and Université de Lille.

Tuition fees: 7 500 €/year
Fees: 5 000€ including a personal laptop, project material, pedagogic kit

The deadline for registration is June 8th, 2020. However, as the number of places is limited, it is recommended to register as soon as possible.
